Hi there! I’m Kou
Hi there! I’m Kou, a Japanese guy from Kanagawa,
just outside Tokyo.
I started this blog because I noticed how often my
foreign English teachers would ask me about Japan —
“What’s a yukata?” “Why do trains run on time?”
“What’s the difference between a shrine and a temple?”
I never had good English answers ready. So I started
writing them down. That became “Nihon Talk.”
What This Blog Is About
Every post here explains a piece of Japan in English —
festivals, food, customs, daily life, and the small
things that make Japan, well, Japan.
Whether you’re:

英語を続けている理由
英語を学び続けているのは、ひとつは 自己成長 のため。新しい言語ができると、世界の見え方が変わる感覚がやみつきです。
もうひとつは、 いつか海外と関わる仕事がしたい から。貿易や海外取引のある仕事に携わるのが、密かな目標です。
ただ、15年も続けてようやく気づいたことがあります。英語が話せることと、日本のことを英語で語れることは、別物だった のです。
「日本のこと、英語でどう言うの?」問題
オンライン英会話を続けていると、講師たちが本当によく日本のことを聞いてきます。
- 「桜はいつ咲くの?」
- 「日本のお祭りで有名なのは?」
- 「日本でおすすめの観光地は?」
質問は無限。でも、いざ答えようとすると、教科書には載っていない言葉ばかり必要になる。
「桜」を “cherry blossom” と言うだけじゃ、会話は広がらない。「花見」を “flower viewing” と訳しても、ブルーシートで宴会する文化までは伝わらない。「温泉」を “hot spring” と説明しても、「裸の付き合い」のニュアンスには届かない。
このギャップを、ひとつずつ埋めていきたい。それが Nihon Talk のテーマです。
