「桜って英語でなんて言うの?」と外国人講師に聞かれて、”cherry blossom”と答えたことはありませんか? 正解です。でも、それだけでは桜の本当の魅力は伝わりません。今回は、英会話で使える桜の話題を、品種から見頃の移り変わり、名所まで網羅的に整理します。
桜は1種類ではない
日本には、桜が400種類以上あると言われています。
“There are over 400 kinds of cherry trees in Japan.”
この一言で、講師の表情が「えっ、そんなに?」と変わります。これは大きな話題のきっかけになる事実です。
ソメイヨシノ(Yoshino Cherry)— 日本を代表する品種
400種類の中でも、私たちが「桜」と聞いて思い浮かべるのは、ほぼ ソメイヨシノ(Yoshino cherry) です。日本の桜の 約8割 がこの品種と言われています。
